NUS-USI President Fergal McFerran has labelled an almost 60% cut by the Department of Health to nursing funding, which will impact on course provision in Northern Ireland, as disgraceful.
NUS-USI President Fergal McFerran said: “I am appalled that any unelected government official could make a decision of this scale with little or no consultation with key stakeholders. On what basis or mandate was this decision taken?
“It is staggering that the department is even considering cutting training funding given the serious pressures that nurses here face and the need to increase healthcare provision here. Can anyone in the department provide any insight into whether there has been any strategic think whatsoever in relation to this decision?
“This disgraceful cut to nurse training funding is an insult to nurses and to the NHS which serve the public under very significant pressure in an exemplary manner.
“The news of this decision reinforces the urgent need to re-establish devolution in Northern Ireland to ensure that decisions such as this are made in the full light of day by people who are accountable to the structures of government and the people who elect them.
“Given the level of concern and outrage from stakeholders who know the impact this will have on public healthcare provision, it is imperative that this decision is overturned immediately.”
