On A-Level results day NUS-USI President Olivia Potter-Hughes has encouraged all students to seek careers guidance following results. Olivia also said that whether students get the grades they wanted or not, there are education options like further education and apprenticeships that can help them move forward in the right direction.
NUS-USI President Olivia Potter-Hughes said: “This is a time of massive excitement but also significant worry. I want to let students know that there are always positive options available no matter what grades they have received.
“Further education colleges offer excellent courses that can help people build the career and future they want to have. Apprenticeships, as well as further and higher education must all been seen as equally important because they all have equal value in building opportunities for students and in growing the economy.
“I would encourage all students to get careers guidance or assistance from their education institutions to help them make the best decisions for them about their best way forward in their education or career path. Even when students think they cannot follow their dreams, because they haven’t received the grades they needed, there are always options available like apprenticeships or further education, which could be a better option for them than their original plans.
“I was completely inconsolable this time four years ago when I did not get the grades I needed to get into my chosen course. I understand how stressful and upsetting that experience can be, but I cannot stress enough that it is not the end of the world, even if it feels that way at the time. I decided to undergo another A-level in an FE college and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Due to this, I realised that the course I had originally applied for wasn’t what I wanted to do and applied for a different one the following year which I really enjoy. I also became involved in the student movement whilst at college and am now the President of NUS-USI.”
“There is more than one route to success and I hope that everyone, whether they got the results they desired this morning or did not, realises that.”
