NUS-USI President Olivia Potter-Hughes has given her support to a letter from Alliance for Choice to Westminster Minister for Women and Equalities Amber Rudd, calling for significant reform of Northern Ireland’s abortion laws.
NUS-USI President Olivia Potter-Hughes said: “NUS-USI supports Alliance for Choice and I strongly welcome this letter being sent to the Westminster Women and Equalities Minster.
“It is over 50 years since the 1967 Abortion Act, and it is essential that that women and anyone who can become pregnant in Northern Ireland sees legislation here regarding abortion reformed.
“We need to see women and anyone who can become pregnant given access to free, safe and legal abortions here in Northern Ireland, and we need to see this delivered as a matter of urgency.
“It’s International Women’s Day today and what better way to recognise it than by delivering the rights that women and anyone who can become pregnant need and deserve regarding abortion in Northern Ireland. At least 724 people travelled to England in 2016 to access abortion care and this demonstrates the urgent need for abortion reform to be delivered here.”
