NUS-USI brings abortion rights for Northern Ireland message around UK

NUS-USI President Olivia Potter Hughes said NUS-USI is today taking the message around the UK that Northern Ireland needs free, safe and legal abortion provision urgently. Olivia is today attending a Demand Abortion Rights in Northern Ireland NOW rally in London and NUS-USI Women’s Officer elect Rachel Watters is speaking at a Demand Abortion Rights in Northern Ireland NOW rally in Glasgow. Today NUS-USI is also calling on people to write to MPs to call for abortion rights in Northern Ireland, and more information on how to do this can be found here: http://www.wetrustwomen.org.uk/northern-ireland/

NUS-USI President Olivia Potter-Hughes said: “The historic abortion referendum success in Ireland means that the landscape has changed, and it has emphasised how totally untenable the legislation regarding abortion in Northern Ireland is. What we also saw in this referendum was how painful it was for people to share their experiences, and we don’t want people to face this situation in Northern Ireland, so it’s essential that there is no referendum on abortion here.

“NUS-USI is taking the message on the need for free, safe and legal abortion provisions in Northern Ireland around the UK today. I am extremely proud that NUS-USI Women’s Officer elect Rachel Watters is speaking on behalf of Alliance for Choice at a Demand Abortion Rights in Northern Ireland NOW rally in Glasgow today, and it demonstrates the groundswell of opinion across the UK for the need for legislation to deliver free, safe and legal abortion urgently in Northern Ireland. Also, today I am attending a Demand Abortion Rights in Northern Ireland NOW rally in Westminster alongside Alliance for Choice.

“NUS-USI also wants to encourage people to write to MPs to call for legislation to deliver abortion rights for Northern Ireland now, and more information on this can be found at: http://www.wetrustwomen.org.uk/northern-ireland/

“If something is a right or is delivering equality, such provision or legislation must be delivered immediately and there must be no referendum. There must be no opportunity for any members of the public to veto people’s rights, therefore there must be no referendum on abortion here. What must happen is that this legislation is delivered here as a matter of urgency.

“With every day that passes, more people are potentially being put in a horrendous position which could put their wellbeing in jeopardy due to the despicable abortion legislation here. Deliver legislation to enable access to free safe and legal abortion in Northern Ireland now – Westminster must act.”
