Robert Murtagh has this afternoon been elected as the new President of NUS-USI, at NUS-USI’s annual conference at the Everglades Hotel in Derry/Londonderry. The new president will begin their term on 1 July 2019.
NUS-USI President elect Robert Murtagh said: “It is an immense privilege to have been elected as the new President of NUS-USI. It an honour to have been elected to this role given the positive impact that NUS-USI has had here as one of the first North-South and East-West organisations, long before similar arrangements created by the Good Friday Agreement.
“The coming year is going to extremely important in shaping the way forward for society in Northern Ireland. NUS-USI is implacably opposed to Brexit because we believe it could wreck devastating damage on our universities and colleges and upon the whole economy here too.
“I want to continue to put the issue of the need to invest in tertiary education at the front of the work that NUS-USI does, and we will continue to provide evidence based policy options to help deliver imp[roved funding for students, universities and colleges.
“It’s crucial that we see the return of devolved government here so that Northern Ireland has the solid foundations need to move forward and to further cement peace, good relations and progress that has been made in Northern Ireland over the past two decades. So much has been achieved but there is so much still to achieve so that we see free safe and legal access to abortion, marriage equality, and a genuine shared future of fully integrated education and rights for all.”
