NUS-USI President Robert Murtagh has said that the leaked no-deal Brexit document that appeared in the media in recent days demonstrates why a no-deal Brexit simply must be ruled out as a matter of urgency.
Robert Murtagh said: “This leaked document outlining the possibility of food and fuel shortages and a hard border on the island of Ireland in the event of a no-deal Brexit only goes to prove that it must be ruled out as soon as possible to provide clarity and reassurance for the weeks ahead. Virtually all of society in Northern Ireland, like students, business people, farmers and people living near the border could be very severely affected if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.
“Young people here almost feel like their future being taken away from them. People need hope and certainty, not fear of what the coming few months holds. Peace in Northern Ireland must be protected. Recent times here have seen extremely disturbing developments, and those who seek to cause havoc may seek to exploit the chaos that a no-deal Brexit may create. It is imperative that the potential chaos of a no-deal Brexit is avoided. The best situation is the current deal we have as members of the EU. The worst case scenario is a no-deal Brexit – this simply must not happen.”
