Belfast City Council opposes rise in tuition fees

Following a vote in Belfast City Council on 2 March 2020 which calls on the Economy Minister to rule out a rise in tuition fees, President Robert Murtagh said:

“I am delighted that Belfast City Council has passed this motion recognising the value that students bring to the city and reassuring them that the Council does not support a rise in tuition fees. We need a more sustainable way to fund our higher education sector, and increasing the burden of debt on young people is neither a fair nor realistic solution. I hope that the Economy Minister takes this statement seriously, and commits to ruling out a rise in tuition fees as she prepares to review future funding arrangements.”
