Ellen Fearon has, this afternoon, been elected as the new President of NUS-USI, at NUS-USI’s annual conference which was held online for the first time. The new president will begin their term on 1 July 2020.
Following changes to NUS-USI’s constitution last year, the new president will serve for two years, unlike previous presidents who only served for one.
NUS-USI President elect Ellen Fearon said: “It is an honour to have been elected as the new President of NUS-USI. We are truly living through unprecedented times and the value of a national student movement has never been more evident.
“From rapid changes to exams and assessments, to housing crisis, financial crisis, and working on the frontline, students have really been caught in the crossfire of the havoc wrecked by the coronavirus pandemic. Right now, student nurses and doctors are caring for patients, researchers in our universities are working to find a vaccine for this disease, and colleges are building Personal Protective Equipment for our health service.
“It has never been more clear that education is a public good and that is why, in the months to come, we will be advocating for an accessible, fully-funded and lifelong post-16 education system, which is free at the point of access.
“Over the next two years I promise to build a grassroots, mass movement of students, learners and apprentices across NI. Together we will build a national campaign to tackle the mental health crisis, put FE development back on the agenda, and fight climate breakdown, to achieve the free, lifelong and accessible education we deserve.”
